Warm New England Winters

{June 3, 2009}   Judging the Judge

Yep, with the nomination of Sonia Maria Sotomayor to the post of Justice of the Supreme court by President Obama, it was not surprising that she would be smeared by the rightist. She is, after all, an appointee of Obama and the righty pundits are not exactly on friendly terms with him. What’s gotten their collective knickers in a twist is this quote during a 2001 lecture at Berkley Law.

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”

Yes, in hindsight, she should have chosen her words a little more carefully. But still, the comments made were taken out of context and blown out of proportion by a media used to doing such things. Wingnut blogs and the credibility-starved Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich blasted her as being ‘racist’, ‘a left-wing extremist’, and other similar epithets. Newsflash: according to most major outlets, Justice Sotomayor is a centrist. One also cannot forget the fact that she was first appointed by President George H. W. Bush (who is well known for his far-left activism, amirite?). Like on many issues dealing with Obama and his presidency, the yelling class has is once again, completely wrong.
